Inhalt: Zusätzlich zum ursprünglichen Soundtrack unter der Leitung von Morris Stoloff als Bonus Bernsteins eigene Version seiner Suite der Filmmusik, die 1960 mit dem New Yorker Philharmonie Orchester aufgenommen wurde; "Despite the title, this is a one-movement composition more in the nature of a tone poem. The score to the classic film "On the Waterfront" was Bernstein's only film score commission. In his book "The Joy of Music" he writes wittily about the process of scoring it, particularly the way the levels of the music are boosted or lowered to match the dialogue or sound tracks, without concern for the composer's plan of the dynamics of the score. The twenty-minute piece begins with the evocative horn call which is introduced under the opening credits of the film; it recurs throughout the suite as a linking device. A percussion-powered "Presto barbaro" follows (In the film, it is linked with impending or erupting violence.). Then there is a lyrical theme which introduces the love interest for Terry (Marlon Brando) who provides the moral impetus for the plot. The resulting fight between Terry and the gangster leads to the broad restatement of the horn theme as Terry walks to victory; but dissonances which pierce this affirmative music remind the listener of the bitterness and suffering that preceded and which still goes on in other lives on the waterfront. The organic unity of the piece makes it a very satisfactory listen without regard to its Hollywood origin or the underlying story. It is one of Bernstein's most satisfying orchestral works and as such ought to be heard on the concert stage much more often." (Joseph Stevenson au allmusic.com)
