Es handelt sich dabei um ein Coveralbum mit der Idee, neue Songs aus alten Motownklassikern zu machen. Wie seine eigenen Soloalben wurde auch "Going Back" ein internationaler Erfolg und eroberte in vielen Ländern die Charts. 2016 ließ Collins "Going Back" neu auflegen, und zwar in remasterter und erweiterter Version. Zusätzlich zum Originalalbum haben es einige Liveaufnahmen auf die Bonus-CD geschafft.
